Sea buckthorn as a source of vitamin B12

When we hear about vitamin B12 from plants, it is important to treat the claim with caution, because vitamin B-12 is a vitamin that is almost not found in plant foods, and if it is present, it is produced from its precursor in the plant by microorganisms.

A German study found that sea buckthorn berries contain a predominantly active form of vitamin B12, with only a small amount of the inactive form. In fact, the sea buckthorn berries tested contained more than 98% bioactive vitamin B12.

It performs many functions in the body, including the formation and renewal of DNA genetic material, the proper functioning of the nervous system and the blood formation.

Since the body cannot produce vitamin B12 on its own, it must be obtained from the diet, where most of it is stored in tissues (especially the liver) via the bloodstream, and a slightly smaller amount is taken up directly by cells that use vitamin B12.

If we have a low intake of vitamin B12 and our ‘stores’ are depleted, we may need it in a few symptoms: tiredness, paleness, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating.
